Mathematics - Middle School

Grade 5

The 5th grade math class meets daily with the Middle School Math Instructor. Topics in fifth grade include: working with fractions and decimals, number theory, measurement, geometry, percent, and graphing and statistics. Students begin each class with a spiral review warm-up in order to keep all topics fresh.

Students in the 5th grade are invited to participate in the Christian Brothers Math Invitational.

Grade 6

The 6th grade math classes meet daily for instruction. The class is split in 2 groups to accommodate the needs of all learners. Textbook resources are supplemented by a variety of materials in order to reinforce key concepts and, in some cases, to add more depth to other skill areas.

Main Topics:

  • Number patterns and fractions
  • Factoring
  • Fraction and decimal operations
  • Integers
  • Evaluating simple algebraic expressions and equations
  • Ratios and proportions
  • Percents
  • Analyzing and interpreting data
  • Probability
  • Geometric figures
  • Measurement and area
  • Surface area and volume
  • Graphing on the coordinate plane

Students in the 6th grade are invited to participate in the Christian Brothers Math Invitational.

Grade 7

The 7th grade math classes meet daily for instruction. The class is split in 2 groups to accommodate the needs of all learners. Textbook resources are supplemented by a variety of materials in order to reinforce key concepts and, in some cases, to add more depth to other skill areas.

Main Topics:

  • Integer operations
  • Mathematical properties
  • Fraction, decimals and percents including operations, problem-solving and relationships
  • Calculating interest and percent application problems
  • Exponents and square roots
  • Solving 2-step equations and inequalities
  • Linear equations and graphs
  • Pythagorean Theorem
  • Measurement of planar figures
  • Geometry, including area, congruence, surface area and volume
  • Data displays
  • Polynomials preview

Students in the 7th grade are invited to participate in the Christian Brothers Math Invitational.

Grade 8

The 8th grade math class meets daily for Algebra instruction. Textbook resources are supplemented by a variety of materials in order to reinforce key concepts and, in some cases, to add more depth to other skill areas. Review of key pre-algebra fundamentals is on-going.

Main Topics:

  • Integer operations
  • Order of operations
  • Problem solving
  • Mathematical properties
  • Solving expressions, equations, and inequalities
  • Linear equations and graphs
  • Systems of equations and inequalities
  • Exponents and radicals
  • Polynomials and factoring
  • Quadratic equations and functions
  • Pythagorean Theorem
  • Probability
  • Rational expressions and equations
